One of our clients had recently started working from home, an appropriate study / office space was required and as no alternative locations in this tight urban property were viable, the existing attic was an obvious choice.
For this locally listed property, an existing hipped roof complicated the possibility of altering or extending into the roofscape. Development was however possible by portraying to the council through intensive iterations, the relevance of a latent historical typology found elsewhere in the conservation area – the ‘single dormer window’.

This one-bedroom flat is part of a subdivided Georgian terraced shop building. It is one of several flats accessed by a shared hallway with a Health Food Café below. As a result of erratic previous development an existing outhouse extension, currently used as a study/small bedroom, is disconnected from the main flat completely. An existing detached house had poorly considered and badly arranged extensions, sheds and outbuildings which resulted in a compromised garden that felt much smaller than it was.
The poorly built structures are demolished, releasing the existing house and garden. Two pavilions are then proposed within the enlarged garden. Extensive refurbishment comprising of a split section to the rear. This sectional arrangement was utilised to develop a concept of a geological strata linking all spaces to the rear with its uniform and consistent finish. The strata forms a raised terrace, a kitchen, floor, wall and ceiling and a metal clad central stair element pierces through forming circulation between the levels and spaces.

This proposal for an extension to a family home in Dublin was informed by the client’s interest in Japanese architecture and the desire for a better connection to the west facing garden.
A courtyard garden, or tsubo-niwa as they are known throughout Japan, is positioned at the centre of the reordered home. A typical tsubo-niwa is limited in size, whereas the courtyard is, in this instance, extended and connected to the living spaces; allowing our clients to live within their garden.
