A 1200 sqm commercial and community building, reflecting its position between Victorian gothic and urban warehouse buildings.
Toynbee Hall is an East London charity tackling poverty and social injustice. This new-build 1200 sqm office and community building, with significant improvements to neighbouring open space, will enhance the charity’s physical and community presence in Spitalfields on the edge of the City of London. Due to open in the summer of 2019.
Our five-storey design mediates between the Victorian character of the Grade II listed Toynbee Hall and the robust, urban grain of Commercial Street. An asymmetric ground floor colonnade makes reference to the original entrance to Toynbee Hall. The basement and ground floor of the building will house the charity’s community spaces, while the office space above will be leased to provide a long-term income stream for the charity.
