We believe architecture is about making simple, useful and beautiful places suffused with thought and meaning. Our intention, as the great South African architect Michael Benedikt put it, is to design spaces that express "the unreasoned joy at the simple correspondence of appearance and reality... the evident rightness of things as they are, seen clearly."
To our core we are realists. We believe that architecture is serious business, the purpose of which is to improve on what we have around us and what came before us. We believe architecture's purpose is to stabilise and not to undermine. We believe that even the smallest of interventions can be restorative; regenerative.
We believe that man's place is in cities, and a sustainable way of life requires it to be so. We also believe the city is man's greatest achievement. We believe in the importance of understanding history. We believe in doing as little design as possible, as Dieter Rams famously said. We believe in listening, in analysis and in thinking before putting pen to paper.
RRA+I as a studio is firmly rooted in Robert's background as a rationalist, a conservationist and a classicist. We have a growing portfolio of carefully considered interventions intended to enhance the lives of our clients and our collective environment. Although our previous focus has been on private residential projects, our intention is to expand into the civic, urban and commercial sectors.

ST. GEORGE'S TERRACE
We first met the owners Alex and Catherine in May 2014, having been recommended by a previous client. They brought to us their elegant wreck: an enormous, 8-bedroom Edwardian villa that had previously been the home of a multi-generational family. Before that it had been bedsits. All told, we were presented with the aftermath of 30+ years of neglect and disinterest. The utter magnitude of the place meant that even basic renovations were going to cost a small fortune.
EXTENSION AND RENOVATION
Lincoln Road is our latest project in the "county roads" of East Finchley. Following a visit to our Durham Road project while it was under construction, the homeowners Ed and Elena signed us up to help renovate and extend what was perhaps the last unloved house in the neighbourhood.
SIDE AND LOFT EXTENSION
A beautiful, locally listed, end of terrace house in at the Tufnell Park Conservation Area that was starting to feel a bit crowded.
Having just had their third child, the owners asked us to help them with a fundamental re-think of how the house could work for them: how they could get a bit more space, and how they could reorganise the space they have to suit the bigger family.

RENOVATION OF GRADE II LISTED APARTMENT
Set in the centre of Primrose Hill Village on a private street overlooking the park, this beautiful garden apartment was found completely unmodernised - having been in the same hands for over 50 years.
EXTENSION AND RENOVATION
The renovation and extension of a Victorian industrial building to create a single-family residence above an existing art gallery, on one of central-east London's busy street markets.
Working as executive architect for Paris based design architects Lia Kiladis + Christine Ilex Beinemeier, this project had us overseeing the renovation and extension of a lovely little Georgian house in central Islington through from RIBA Stage E (Technical Design), to Tender and Construction.
